Cirque du Soleil plans performance for Oscar show
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Aerialists, acrobats and contortionists are among the guests at this year's Academy Awards.
Telecast producers Don Mischer and Brian Grazer say they've invited Cirque do Soleil to perform during the Oscar show.
The three-minute performance will be among the international troupe's biggest yet, said Cirque du Soleil special events director Yasmine Khalil, featuring more than 50 artists. Most Cirque shows employ 75 to 80 artists over two hours, she said.
Cirque du Soleil has a show in residence at the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars will be presented on Feb. 26, but the performance planned for the awards telecast is "unique for this one evening" and not taken from any of the troupe's 22 productions playing around the world.
Performers from those shows, however, are heading to Hollywood. Khalil says artists from Japan and Russia are flying in to participate in the Academy Awards segment.
Khalil wouldn't reveal any specifics about the performance other than to say "the theme is very much in line with paying tribute to the movie-theater experience" and different from "Iris," Cirque's regular show at the Kodak Theater, which is billed as "a journey into the world of cinema."
Like "Iris," the music for the troupe's Oscar performance was composed by Danny Elfman.
Cirque du Soleil troupes were reluctant to perform on television in years past "because we felt as though a lot of it got lost in translation," Khalil said, but they appreciated the way their performance came across when they participated in the 74th Academy Awards.
"That boosted our confidence knowing that we're comfortable in front of the camera," she said.
Khalil and the performers have been working on their routine since before Christmas, and they're eager to get into the Kodak and try it out on the Oscar stage for the various camera operators shooting the show.
"To capture 50 people jumping around everywhere from the ceiling and from the ground and right and left and center, it's a whole added challenge," she said.
That challenge extends to the viewers, too.
"They should be very attentive. There will be a lot happening," she said. "You don't want to be blinking too much because you might miss something."

Museum robbed at Greece's Ancient Olympia
ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Two masked armed robbers tied up a museum guard at the birthplace of the ancient Olympics in southern Greece and made off with dozens of artifacts, authorities said Friday.
Greece's Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos submitted his resignation after the robbery at the antiquities museum in Ancient Olympia, but it was unclear whether it had been accepted by Prime Minister Lucas Papademos. Geroulanos was traveling to Olympia on Friday.
Police set up roadblocks in the area as part of a broad search to try to locate the robbers, who wore ski masks.
Museum authorities and police did not have an immediate account of the items taken from smashed display cases, but local authorities and police said about 60 artifacts are estimated to have been snatched.
"According to the results of the investigation so far, unknown persons, this morning, at about 07:34 a.m., immobilized the guard of the museum and removed bronze and clay objects from the displays, as well as a gold ring," a police statement said.
Sporting authorities are to hold a ceremony at the museum on May 10 to light the Olympic flame for the London Games.
Olympia Mayor Efthimios Kotzas urged authorities to improve security at the site.
"The level of security is indeed lacking," Kotzas told state-run NET television. "These are treasures. A piece of world heritage has been lost thanks to these thieves ... I think (authorities) should have been more mindful and the security should have been more serious."
Friday's robbery is the second major museum theft in the past two months in Greece. In January, thieves made off with art works by 20th century masters Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian from the country's National Gallery in central Athens.
In that pre-dawn heist, the burglars also took a pen and ink drawing of a religious scene by Italian 16th century painter Guglielmo Caccia. A fourth work by Mondrian also was removed from the National Art Gallery in one of the best-guarded areas of central Athens, but the thieves abandoned it as they fled. No arrests have been made.

JERUSALEM ? A truck lost control in slick, rainy weather and barreled into a Palestinian school bus on Thursday, killing five children and a teacher and drawing hundreds of people to a West Bank hospital in an outpouring of grief, police said.
The bus left the city of Ramallah on a school excursion but returned due to heavy rains and stormy weather, according to Palestinian police spokesman Yousif Osrael. On the way back, a truck careened into the school bus, causing it to flip and catch fire, Osrael said. The children killed were aged four to six.
The accident was in the central West Bank, in an area Palestinians claim as their future state but where Israel has full control. Both Israeli and Palestinian rescuers arrived at the scene, and evacuated at least 30 injured passengers to hospitals in Ramallah and Jerusalem, according to Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.
The truck driver was an Arab Israeli and all the victims were Palestinian, Rosenfeld said. Israeli and Palestinian police are investigating the accident. But Rosenfeld said there is no suspicion of foul play and its likely that the wintry weather and slick roads caused the collision.
After the accident, Palestinians rushed to the Ramallah Medical Compound hospital to check on their children and donate blood.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning and ordered flags flown at half-staff. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered his condolences and pledged to give any aid necessary to the Palestinian Authority.
"It was a tragedy," Abbas said outside the hospital. "It was God's fate. There was rain and fog and that is what happened."
Palestinian police initially said the crash killed at least eight people but later updated the tally to six ? five schoolchildren and one teacher. Police said 42 were injured, including three in critical condition.

Hudson Clean Energy Takes Stake in GSE Investment
Hudson Clean Energy Partners has acquired a minority stake in China-based GSE Investment Corp., an operator of solid waste-to-energy and tap water/wastewater treatment projects. The company is controlled by private equity firm MBK Partners. Terms of Hudson Clean Energy?s investment were not disclosed.

How a protein protects cells from HIV infection
ScienceDaily (Feb. 12, 2012) ? A novel discovery by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center and colleagues reveals a mechanism by which the immune system tries to halt the spread of HIV. Harnessing this mechanism may open up new paths for therapeutic research aimed at slowing the virus' progression to AIDS. The study was published online ahead of print on February 12 in Nature Immunology.
"A lot of research on viruses, especially HIV, is aimed at trying to understand what the body's mechanisms of resistance are and then to understand how the virus has gotten around these mechanisms," said co-lead investigator Nathaniel R. Landau, PhD, a professor of microbiology at the Joan and Joel Smilow Research Center at NYU School of Medicine.
The research focused on a protein called SAMHD1. Recent studies have found that immune cells, called dendritic cells, containing the protein are resistant to infection by HIV. Since the discovery, scientists have sought to understand how SAMHD1 works to protect these cells, with hopes that science might find a way to synthetically apply that protection to other cells.
Dr. Landau and his team are now able to provide an answer:
When a virus, like HIV, infects a cell, it hijacks the cell's molecular material to replicate. That molecular material is in the form of deoxynucleotide triphosphates (dNTPs), which are the building blocks for DNA. Once the virus replicates, the resulting DNA molecule contains all the genes of the virus and instructs the cell to make more virus.
Researchers wanted to understand how cells containing the SAMHD1 protein are protected from such hijacking. They found that SAMHD1 protects the cell from viruses by destroying the pool of dNTPs, leaving the virus without any building blocks to make its genetic information -- a process researchers call nucleotide pool depletion. "SAMHD1 essentially starves the virus," Dr. Landau said. "The virus enters the cell and then nothing happens. It has nothing to build and replicate with, so no DNA is made."
As a result, the most common form of HIV does not readily infect these cells. Instead, the virus has evolved to replicate mainly in a different kind of cell, called CD4 T-cells, which do not contain SAMHD1 and therefore have a healthy pool of dNTPs. Dr. Landau explained that the virus has evolved in such a way that it may deliberately avoid trying to infect immune cells with SAMHD1 to avoid alerting the greater immune system to activate a variety of antiviral mechanisms to attack the virus. Viruses that are related to HIV, like HIV-2 and SIV, have developed a protein called viral protein X (VPX) that directly attacks SAMHD1. This allows the virus to infect dendritic cells, an important type of immune cell.
"Viruses are remarkably clever about evading our immune defenses," Dr. Landau said. "They can evolve quickly and have developed ways to get around the systems we naturally have in place to protect us. It's a bit of evolutionary warfare and the viruses, unfortunately, usually win. We want to understand how the enemy fights so that we can outsmart it in the end."
Understanding the mechanism by which SAMHD1 provides protection to cells may provide a new idea about how to stop or slow the virus' ability to spread, Dr. Landau explained. Potential future research efforts, for example, might focus on finding a way to increase the amount of SAMHD1 in cells where it does not exist, or to reduce the amount of dNTPs in cells vulnerable to infection.
"Over the past few years, a number of these natural resistance mechanisms have been identified, specifically in HIV, but some have potential applications to other viruses, as well," he said. "This is a very exciting time in HIV research. Many of the virus' secrets are being revealed through molecular biology, and we're learning a tremendous amount about how our immune system works through the study of HIV."
Funded in part by the National Institutes of Health and the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the study was conducted in collaboration with researchers at several institutions, including the University of Rochester Medical Center and The Cochin Institute, in Paris.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? He knew his game was getting close, and he broke through with flair Sunday in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
That turned out to be Phil Mickelson, not Tiger Woods.
In a big, big way.
Mickelson went from a six-shot deficit to a two-shot lead in just six holes, closed with an 8-under 64 for a two-shot victory over Charlie Wi and gave Woods a Sunday thrashing not many saw coming.
Mickelson and Woods played in the second-to-last group, and Mickelson beat him by 11 shots. He won for the fourth time at Pebble Beach, and became only the ninth player in PGA Tour history with 40 wins.
"Pebble Beach ... it feels awesome no matter what number it is," Mickelson said.
It was anything but that for Woods, who was reduced to a supporting role on a cool, overcast day along the Pacific. Right when it looked as though Woods might still be in the game after holing a bunker shot for birdie on the par-3 12th, Mickelson answered by pouring in a 30-foot par putt.
Mickelson seized control for good with a 40-foot par save on the 15th hole, and he played it safe ? Mickelson is capable of that every once in a while ? on the 18th hole and still made birdie.
Wi, who started the final round with a three-shot lead, four-putted for double bogey on the opening hole and never quite recovered. He closed with back-to-back birdies for an even-par 72 and his fifth runner-up finish on tour.
It was the third straight week on tour that the winner started the final round at least six shots behind a 54-hole leader going after his first tour victory.
The shocker, though, was how Woods fell apart.
He has been taking big strides with his game over the past few months, and he looked poised to break through after a 67 in the third round at Pebble Beach got him to within four shots of the lead.
But he failed to make birdie on the easy opening stretch at Pebble Beach, and even when he made his first birdie at the par-5 sixth, Mickelson poured in a 20-foot eagle putt to take the outright lead.
"I didn't hit it as bad as the score indicated, but I putted awful," Woods said. "As good as I felt on the greens yesterday, I felt bad today. Anything I tried to do wasn't working. Consequently, I made a ton of mistakes on the green."
Two weeks ago in his 2012 debut at Abu Dhabi, Woods was tied for the lead with unheralded Robert Rock going into the final round and didn't break par, tying for third.
Woods used to own Mickelson, but that changed at the 2007 Deutsche Bank Championship. This was the fifth straight time Mickelson posted the better score when playing in the same group as Woods in the final round.
Mickelson has won three of those tournaments, although they have yet to be in the final group on those occasions.
Mickelson started his season sluggishly, failing to crack the top 25 at the Humana Challenge and Phoenix Open, and missing the cut at Torrey Pines. He said his putting was as good as ever, and it was a matter of getting his game in sync.
It simply sang on Sunday, mostly his amazing touch on the greens ? a long eagle putt at No. 2 that caught part of the hole, long two-putts for par and enough birdies to make him a winner at Pebble Beach again.
"It feels just amazing," Mickelson said. "I felt like my game was there, but coming out the first couple of weeks, I posted some horrendous scores and started to question it. To be able to play the way I did the last 18 holes really means a lot."
Mickelson finished at 17-under 269 and earned $1.152 million for his first win since the Houston Open last year. He will move to No. 11 in the world.
Ricky Barnes closed with a 67 and finished third. Kevin Na tied for fifth and earned a spot in the Match Play Championship in two weeks at Arizona.
Wi talked about battling the demons of self-doubt, and they must have had the first green surrounded. Equipped with a three-shot lead to start the final round, Wi four-putted from 35 feet above the hole for a double bogey.
Just like that, the game was on.
That still wasn't enough for Woods to get in on the action. Standing in the sixth fairway, Woods was only one shot out of the lead, yet the sleeves of his red shirt and his name on the leaderboard didn't seem to make him stand out the way it has before.
The opening holes had something to do with that, and watching Mickelson play alongside him.
Mickelson nearly holed an eagle putt across the second green; Woods missed a 5-foot birdie putt that stayed 2 inches above the hole. Mickelson holed a 15-foot birdie putt down the hill at the fourth; Woods had a 30-foot putt up the hill that was 3 feet short. Mickelson's tee shot on the par-3 fifth settled a foot from the cup. Woods missed his birdie putt from 12 feet.

Mickelson started the day six shots behind and went two shots ahead with an eagle on the sixth hole. Woods then vanished in a series of blunders ? missing a 2?-foot par putt on the seventh, missed a 5-foot par putt on the eighth, and a third straight bogey at No. 9 when he hit his approach into the bunker.
The only hope for Woods came on the 12th, when he holed his bunker shot. It looked like it might be a two-shot swing, pulling him to within three of the lead, until Mickelson made his 30-footer for par.
On the next hole, Mickelson hit an approach to 2 feet and Woods' tee shot landed in a divot.
"It's frustrating because I had a chance," Woods said. "All I had to do was get off to a good, solid start. And I didn't do that."

Cynthia Rowley collection inspired by craftsmen (AP)
NEW YORK ? Well, now we know how she does it: With lots of YouTube breaks and double-brewed coffee. In this so-much-information era, designer Cynthia Rowley spilled her work habits to the audience gathered Thursday night for the runway preview of her fall collection during New York Fashion Week.
Rowley lined the bleachers set up in the lobby of a Meatpacking district building with notes that also included Twitter handles for her top hair, makeup and jewelry people so that the editors, buyers, stylists and a few celebrity pals, including Rebecca Romijn, would know just what they were seeing.
"What inspired the collection: Mechanics, cobblers and leathermen. Welding, oil slicks. Women artists making big, strong work," Rowley wrote.
Showing her own craftsman skills, Rowley somehow turned that into a lovely blouson dress in a blue-flame print, a soft buttery leather shift, and a tweed denim shirtdress. She paired skinny pants covered in a tortoise-shell print with a leather jacket and a jersey jumper with mixed print sleeves.
There were a few gimmicks, including jewel-encrusted coveralls, which was more jumpsuit than uniform, but still perhaps a little too literal. The jeweled collars, however, which created a turtleneck effect, seem like something that could really catch on.
Rowley likes to push limits on her catwalks ? once even having the models walk on a path covered in candy ? and that makes her show a real "show." For this go-around, she had the crowd sit opposite a wall covered in screens that simulcast from different spots what was happening in the runway, but all the outfits were stripped of color.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? GOP presidential rivals made contrasting appeals to conservatives Friday, with Mitt Romney saying he proved his mettle as Massachusetts governor and Rick Santorum saying Romney is so moderate that electing him would be a "hollow victory."
Their speeches to the Conservative Political Action Conference came as Santorum tries to convert his surprising caucus wins this week into a resilient, muscular campaign and Romney seeks to persuade conservatives that he won't disappoint them.
Santorum's tack was unorthodox, and perhaps risky. Facing Republicans who desperately want to replace President Barack Obama, Santorum said it's even more vital to put a conservative crusader into the White House.
"We will no longer abandon and apologize for the policies and principles that made this country great for a hollow victory in November," he said.
If voters see that as a hint that it's more important to be ideologically pure than to oust Obama, Santorum may have to explain more fully in the days ahead.
Romney, speaking a few hours later, said his four-year record in Massachusetts proved that he will fight for conservative values against the toughest odds. "I know conservatism because I have lived conservatism," he said. Veering briefly from his written text, he called himself "severely conservative."
But Romney skated past details of his administration that trouble some right-leaning groups, including requiring state residents to obtain health insurance.
Without saying Romney's name, Santorum said the former governor's health care record would make it impossible for him to draw needed contrasts with Obama. He said Romney had created "the stepchild of Obamacare."
Saying the Obama-backed 2010 health care law "will crush economic freedom," Santorum urged Republicans not to nominate "someone who would simply give that issue away in the fall."
Santorum warned Republicans against a premature emphasis on moderate voters, who could decide the presidential election in swing states.

Romney tried to reassure the audience that antipathy to Obama will energize millions of voters this fall, an indirect way of saying the lukewarm reception he gets from some conservatives isn't crucial.
Obama "is the conservative movement's top recruiter," he said.
Romney said he would cut federal spending like he cut state spending in Massachusetts, although he vowed not to touch military budgets.
"I was a conservative governor," he said. "I fought against long odds in a deep blue state. I understand the battles that we, as conservatives, must fight because I have been on the front lines."
Santorum and Romney criticized the Obama administration's bid to require Catholic-affiliated employers to cover birth control in their health insurance plans. After Santorum's morning speech and before Romney's afternoon address, Obama announced an update. He said religious-affiliated employers will not have to cover birth control for their employees. Instead, the government will demand that insurance companies be directly responsible for providing contraception.
Santorum, a Catholic with a strong record of fighting legalized abortion, said Obama is "telling the Catholic Church that they are forced to pay for things that are against their basic tenets and teachings."
"It's not about contraception, it's about economic liberty," he said.
Romney, a Mormon who once supported legalized abortion, vowed to reverse "every single Obama regulation that attacks our religious liberty and threatens innocent life."
His critics cite a 2005 interview in which Romney said rape victims deserved either access to or information about so-called morning after pills that some say are a form of abortion.
Both men restated their standard criticisms of Obama. Romney called him "the poster child for the arrogance of government."
